The General Education Development or Graduate Equivalency Diploma (GED) is comparable to a high school diploma. It was developed for those adults who did not graduate from high school. Getting GED will take some work, but it is a means of demonstrating proficiency levels which are required to progress in one’s career or education.
To be eligible to take the test, you have to be at least 16 years or older. You must not currently be enrolled in a high school. You will also be eligible if you have not graduated from high school. You will have to comply with state, territorial or provincial requirements regarding your age, residency and the length of time that has passed since you left school.
Other circumstances that might be applicable for one to take the test are if you possess a high school diploma which was obtained from an unaccredited high school, or if you were home-schooled. Those candidates who graduated from non-US high schools will be eligible to take the test if they meet all the federal and state requirements. It is not a requirement to be a US citizen if you wish to take the test.
The GED consists of five tests which evaluate knowledge of science, math, reading, social studies and writing. For the reading, social studies and science tests you will be required to read a short passage and answer questions which indicate that you have full understanding of the information that has been read. These tests are set up to measure your ability to assess and interpret the information provided.
To succeed in the math test, you need to have basic number skills, basic geometry and algebra knowledge as well as some data analysis skills. It is recommended that you learn to use a scientific calculator as you will be allowed to use one for part of the test.
There are two sections to the writing test. The first section is a multiple choice test about the methods of English usage. The second section is an essay with a 45 minute time period.
The standard scores for the tests range from 200 to 800 for each test. A passing score is approximately 60% per test. This means that you will have to attain at least 410 on each test to make sure that you pass it. And you will require a total average score of at least 450 for the five test package. So, to ensure that you pass, you cannot get below 410 per test, but if you do in one test, you will have to ensure that you make up for it in another. You can score one point per question, however, the essay section is marked differently as it is based on your writing ability.
Online facilities to Getting GED are not available. The American Council of Education governs and monitors the tests and the testing rules and regulations. The official tests are available only at designated centers which are located throughout the US, US Territories as well as in Canada. Most universities, colleges and employers in the US accept this credential.
